The severe thunderstorms began as a trickle around 5PM on Friday night (08-08-2014) however by 6.30 PM it had developed in to what residents could only describe a monsoon.
Drainage systems were overwhelmed as the water became trapped behind the towns flood defences.
Several motorists had to be rescued from cars by the fire service when the water rose to as much as five feet high in less than a couple of minutes.

The River level remained within safety levels, the actual problem appeared to be flood defences built to protect the town had trapped thousands of gallons of rain water behind them, when drains could not cope the water had nowhere to go.

Several residents mopping up last night blamed the authorities for sealing up drainage points along river banking and then failing to clear gulleys and road drains.
One resident stated that it just had no where to go, the drains are blocked solid with debris, they have not been cleared for years.
